Hesiod's poetic work is the Theogony (Greek Θεογονία, “the origin of the gods”, VIII-VII century BC). Pontus gave birth to Nereus, a hater of lies, a truth-teller, the eldest among the children. He is universally called an old man, for his soul is always frank, without malice, does not forget about the truth, but is knowledgeable in good, fair advice. A prophetic elder, able to reincarnate into whatever he wishes. Heracles, performing his 12th feat, had to find out from him the way to the titan Atlas. To do this, he had to catch Nereus, predicting what he would turn into.
