Maitreya (Sanskrit. मैत्रेय, maitreya , “loving, benevolent”; Pali: Metteya; also Maitreya, Maitri, Maidari) is the most revered person in the Buddhist Mongolian and Turkic peoples, the coming Guru of mankind, the “lord called compassion,” the bodhisattva and Buddha of the new world, the golden era in Buddhism or Satya-yuga. Maitreya is the only Bodhisattva honored by all schools of Buddhism, and the only one honored by the oldest Theravada school.
