Bardo Thödol, the Tibetan Book of the Dead, describes the three main states of the bardo: Chikhai Bardo, Chyenid Bardo, and Sidpa Bardo. A righteous person enters Chikkhai Bardo and sees the Buddha as pure light. A person whose life has been colored by passions sees the Buddha divided into male-female hypostasis. The sinner enters the Sidpa Bardo where he is greeted by frighteningly wrathful blood-drinking deities. The task of the deceased is to realize that this is just the underside of his earthly life and whether he will incarnate in a new body or ascend to nirvana depends on this understanding.
